The town of Willis is steeped in Texas history, going back to the early days of the railroad and lumber industry. The town was founded more than 150 years ago when the Great Northern Railroad began running a track from Houston to Chicago. Brothers Peter and Richard Willis donated their land to the railroad in 1870, and a town was born. For the next few years, as train traffic flowed along the track, the town grew and grew.

The timber industry was one of the primary employers in the area, providing jobs and revenue for over a hundred years. Other cash crops included watermelons, tomatoes, cotton, and tobacco. As industries and families came and went from the town, Willis, Texas grew from a stop along the railroad line to a vibrant community filled with its own history and traditions.
