Brothers Peter and Richard Willis donated their land to the railroad in 1870, and a town was born. For the next few years, as train traffic flowed along the track, the town grew and grew.

The timber industry was one of the primary employers in the area, providing jobs and revenue for over a hundred years. Other cash crops included watermelons, tomatoes, cotton, and tobacco.
